Ragusa Ibla |
Ragusa is the capital of the southernmost Italian province and one of a few administrative centres that is located at a height of over 500 meters. The city is divided into lower Ragusa, called Ragusa Ibla, and higher Ragusa (Superiore). Ragusa Ibla is an area with a characteristic architectural style. It is destination of many film directors (for example Commissario Montalbano series), directors of TV commercials and also of many tourists from all over the world. Antique Ibla rises on a hill over 300 metres high and it had contacts with the Greeks as proven by necropolises in the adjacent area of Ibleo Garden. |

In the same Ragusa Ibla you can admire the cathedral of San Giorgio, which is another favourite spot of film directors (such as Divorce Italian Style, People of Honour) and some TV commercials (a famous commercial of iced tea). The city was seriously damaged by the earthquake of 1693, and only a part of the cathedral and a few little churches remained upright. The first stone for the new cathedral was laid on 28 June 1739 but the reconstruction works began only in 1744. The architect who was entrusted to carry out the reconstruction in 1738 was Rosario Gagliardi, the famous architect of the city of Noto. |

Before the earthquake of 1693, the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista was located in the ancient part of Ragusa under the walls of the medieval castle. As the cathedral was seriously destructed by the earthquake, it was rebuilt in the centre of the new city area of Ragusa (Superiore). The first stone was laid on 15 April 1694 and it was finished just four months after, so on 16 August it was already open for service. Such a short time employed for the construction leads to believe that the church was supposed to be very small and inadequate for an area in expansion. For this reason, a new, much bigger reconstruction of the cathedral was started in 1718. |
